A 'physical educational map' (физическая учебная карта) of the Crimean peninsula, featuring three smaller maps (a climate map, a soil map and a vegetation map). The legend includes cities, boundaries, roads and railroads, natural resources and touristic attractions (relating to the history, culture and nature of Crimea). On the right side of the map, all the tourist attractions (museums, monuments, obelisks, ruins, palaces, etc.) are listed per city. This collection explores American pictorial maps from the 1930s. Their modes of representation and their content may differ, but they all represent an attempt at shaping and responding to contemporary national identity. Depicted beside and beneath the map's ostensible themes (food, natural resources, American history), is more subliminal messaging about race and American identity. The aesthetics of the maps vary, but they all depict the United States in approximately the same scale and style.
<p>In my project, I hope to explore the arguments these maps were making. Further questions include: why was there an uptick in pictorial map making in this time? More broadly, how does the form of these pictorial maps relate to their function? What does the publishing power behind these maps -- one map was privately published, two were published by large food companies -- mean? How do these maps fit in to the larger historiographical discussion on the creation and consumption of culture during the 1930s? What is the connection to the Great Depression?</p>

A 1930 pictorial map of the United States with a focus on the foods produced by each state. The colors of the map are vibrant, and the decoration stylized. Within each state, the artist/cartographer has drawn in imagery of the food products. Additionally, each state contains images of the peoples and cultural components of the state. These images are often racialized and stereotyped. Often, images are combined to create tableaux (chases, thefts, interactions), which usually serve to enforce stereotypes, particularly of African Americans. The bottom of the map contains a banner which gives a romanticized account of American progress. The map was published by the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, and also serves as an advertisement for the company, noting all the locations of Great Atlantic and Pacific outposts and the efficiency of their shipping. Britain Colonial Mapping of Western Palestine in the Ottoman period
Description

The Palestine Exploration Fund (PEF) of Great Britain conducted an extensive survey of Western Palestine from 1872-1877, during the Ottoman period. While the fund was headed by religious figures and academics, there was also involvement from the British government. Essentially, the religious and academic associations of the fund may have served as a front to allow the British government to collect intelligence on the region. For example, the British Foreign Office had documented involvement in the production and funding of the survey project, which increased with the Russo-Turkian War (1877-78). This survey was the most detailed and technologically advanced to date and was ultimately employed by the British in their invasion of Palestine in WWI.
In addition to its attention to topographic detail, this mapping project is notable for its area of focus. Unlike other maps produced by Western colonial powers at the time, such as France and Germany, this map focuses exclusively on an area west of the Jordan river. Uncannily, its borders resemble those of the future British Mandate (1920-1948). The survey is also careful to include the significant holy sites of the New Testament.
After the maps production, the British Foreign Office required that the PEF delay the publication of the maps for a year to control the dispersal of sensitive intelligence information.
Thus, these maps should be evaluated both as products of academic and religious scholarship and as tools in the British colonial enterprise.

<p>This pictorial map depicts the history of the United States, with history seeming to be defined as colonial activity -- or even more broadly, white history (although it does record the historical locations of several Native American tribes). It records historical events such as battles and colonial discoveries; historical locations such as white American settlements and the place where the sod breaking plod was invented. The illustrations are largely confined to state borders, with the exception of rivers and migration trails or army marches. The bottom of the map contains insets with expanded illustration and context for a number of regions and events, such as "The Frontier" and "The Declaration of Independence". The map also extends beyond the borders of the United States and points out the colonial events on several colonial islands, in Mexico, and Canada, as well as routes that colonial explorers followed. </p>

My curated map collection helps analyze how a particular space, the basin of the Little Missouri River in present day North Dakota, took on special personal meaning to Theodore Roosevelt in the 1880s. My project investigates how the land and people in the Little Missouri created a unique cultural and historical phenomenon that endured not just in Roosevelt’s conscience but also in the national imagination. My project will answer such questions as: what were the cultural and economic forces that led to a ranching boom in the Little Missouri Basin in the 1880s? How did the space change Roosevelt? How did he and others change the space? What cultural, ideological, and personal meaning did Roosevelt attach to the space, and how, and why? How did what happened there reflect or influence understandings of national identity in the latter half of the 19th century? I include these maps as texts and tools to provide context and analysis in answering these and other questions.

My description: This map provides a view into the settlement and organization of the Dakota territories. It depicts the division of the territories into townships and counties. The division into townships ceases about halfway across the territories moving East to West, allowing us to see how at this time, in the 1870s, the land in the Western part of the Dakotas had yet to be surveyed and settled.
The map also provides extensive information about railway lines in U.S. cities (St. Louis, Baltimore and Washington, Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, Cincinnati, Denver). The placement of these railway networks next to the map of the Dakota Territories implies an intention on the part of the map-maker to tell a story of how the cities connect, or soon will, to the sparsely populated territories. Indeed, the bottom right (Southeast) corner of the main portion of the map shows a rail line into Yankton, a town in the territories, with a note that says, "Chicago to Yankton, 575 Miles 31 Hours."
Finally, the advertisements for revolvers and watches sold by "J. Bride & Co.," a New York retailer, indicate a particular audience for the map: Easterners looking to go West to the Dakota territories. Seeing as Theodore Roosevelt was a New Yorker who did just that, this map seems to speak faithfully to Roosevelt's historical moment.
